COMING EVENTS

The Catskills June 5-8, 2025

Outing: The Catskills
Where: Roscoe, New York
When: June 5 -8, 2025.  Thursday – Sunday

An outing is planned to fish the trout streams in The Catskills Region at Roscoe, NY.  The outing will be for 4 days, 3 nights, June 5, 6, 7, 8, Thursday – Sunday.  It takes about 5 ½ - 6 hours to arrive at Roscoe, NY.

There are at least 5 main streams to fish; Beaverkill, Willowenoc, Neversink, East Branch Delaware and Callicoon.  Other rivers of interest can be fished.  The trout streams of The Catskills are considered the birthplace of the American style dry fly fishing and the Catskill fly tying style and fished by the old timers like Theodore Gordon.  These streams are accessible from a centralized town of Roscoe, NY.  Roscoe has been designated as “Trout Town USA”.  How can any true fly fisher not experience these trout streams of the Catskills where history was made?

We will stay in Roscoe, NY, at either The Rockland House (https://www.rocklandhouse.com, 607-498-4240) as the primary place and the Roscoe Motel (https://www.roscoemotel.com, 607-261-0874) as the secondary place.  Both places are only fair in the $120-150 range, are close to each other, and are on or very close to the Beaverkill River.  Roscoe is home of 2 Fly Shops and the famous Dette Flies close by in Livingston Manor.  Also nearby in Livingston Manor, NY, is the famous Catskills Fly Fishing Center and Museum. Other motels are found in Liberty, NY, only 20-30 min from Roscoe, with low budget motels if required.  It does take about 5 ½ - 6 hours to travel to Roscoe, NY, so 2 days will be mostly travel.  More details on travel plans, directions, if a car caravan is wanted, and meeting place details, will be provided later.  Lou hopes all travel in car caravan so nobody gets lost.

I do suggest making reservations now.  Double check that the reservations can be cancelled if your plans change, or roommates are made. It’s my understanding that they can be cancelled within 1 week notice without penalties.  But double check. I inquired to availability during that date and of course the reply is “it depends”.

This is my 2nd time to the Catskills trout streams, so I am no expert, the 1st time being 7 years ago.  So, we will all learn together as we go.  I know some experienced fly fisherpersons in PPTU have been to The Catskills before so I will rely on their guidance and telling us where to go.  A Major Catskill Hatch Chart for May/June shows only March browns, Sulfurs, Green drake, Grey fox, Dun variant, and Blue wing olives. Be prepared and start tying flies now. Or buy flies in Roscoe or from Dettes Fly Shop.

A NY trout fishing license and trout stamp are required. I was told not all the fly shops in Roscoe sell licenses.  Can get license on-line at https://www.ny.gov/services/get-freshwater-fishing-license.

To Sign-up for the Outing:  Please fill out the Registration/Liability form for the Outing.  Go to the PPTU website at https://pptu.org/events/outingregistration and select Catskills.

Please let me know where a room is made.  I can supply a list, if requested, of the people going so one can find a roommate and share driving. More details will be made later about car caravan driving.

Any suggestions regarding travel directions are appreciated.  Tentative plans are to go thru Callicoon and Callicoon Center.

If there are any questions, need assistance or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Hope to see you there!
